Many travellers discover, while planning their trip, that the real Sahara desert — golden dunes stretching to the horizon — is actually several hours' drive from Marrakech, not just outside the city. It's a real journey within the journey, and one worth planning properly.

How long to plan for

The classic excursion runs 2 or 3 days from Marrakech, with one (or two) nights bivouacked in the Merzouga desert, known for the Erg Chebbi dunes, among the tallest in Morocco. The 2-day version is more intense (a lot of driving, little sleep); the 3-day version, with a stop in Ouarzazate or the Draa valley, is far more comfortable and lets you actually enjoy the journey, not just the destination.

The typical itinerary (3-day version)

Day 1: Marrakech → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

The road crosses the Tichka Pass in the High Atlas (2,260m elevation), with spectacular mountain views. A possible stop at the Ouarzazate film studios ("the Hollywood of the desert," where many films and series have been shot), then overnight in the Dades or Roses valley.

Day 2: Todra Gorge → Merzouga

A stop at the striking Todra Gorge, a canyon with walls over 300 metres high, before reaching Merzouga in the late afternoon. This is where the most anticipated part begins: a camel ride at sunset to the bivouac, right in the heart of the dunes.

Bivouac night

Under a Berber tent, usually with a traditional dinner, music around the fire, and above all a starry sky rarely matched elsewhere — the near-total absence of light pollution in the desert makes the Milky Way clearly visible to the naked eye on a clear night.

Day 3: Sunrise over the dunes → back to Marrakech

Wake before dawn to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi, one of the most memorable moments of the trip, then head back toward Marrakech (allow a full day of driving, or an extra stop if time allows).

What to bring

Organise it yourself or book a tour?

Most travellers book an organised excursion (local agency or arranged through their host, often well-informed): bivouac logistics, a driver used to mountain roads, and on-site support for the camel ride make the whole experience far easier than organising it solo.

Many Moroccan hosts, especially in Marrakech, can recommend or directly arrange a reliable excursion for their guests — don't hesitate to ask when booking your stay.
