Tucked into the Rif Mountains at about 600 metres of altitude, Chefchaouen owes its worldwide fame to walls painted in every shade of blue. Less crowded than Marrakech or Fès, it offers a slower pace, cooler air, and light that keeps changing throughout the day — a playground for photography, but also a restful stop in a Moroccan trip.

How to get to Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen has no airport; it's reached by road, most often from Tangier (about 2h) or Fès (about 3h30). CTM and Supratours buses serve the town regularly, and many travellers arrange a private transfer or shared grand taxi from Tangier, which stays affordable when split between several people. Think of it as a stop on a northern Morocco itinerary rather than an isolated destination.

How long to stay

One night and two full days cover the essentials: the medina is easy to walk, and its modest size means you can see it all without rushing. Staying an extra night mostly lets you enjoy the alleys early in the morning, before the day-trip crowds arrive — that's when the town is at its most photogenic and peaceful.

What to see and do

Get lost in the blue medina

This is the main activity, and the best one: no precise destination is needed, just walking. Every alley, every staircase, every door offers a new shade of blue, dotted with flower pots and cats that seem to have called this place home forever.

The Kasbah and its small museum

At the heart of Outa el-Hammam square, the 15th-century kasbah houses an Andalusian garden and a small ethnographic museum. The view from its ramparts over the surrounding blue rooftops is one of the best in town.

Hike to Akchour Waterfall or God's Bridge

About thirty minutes' drive away, the Akchour valley offers an easy-to-moderate hike along a river, up to a waterfall and a natural rock arch nicknamed "God's Bridge." A great way to round off the urban visit with a bit of nature.

The Spanish Mosque viewpoint

A 30-45 minute walk from the medina leads to an abandoned mosque offering a sweeping view of the blue city nestled among the mountains — particularly striking at sunset.

Photo tip: morning light before 9am gives the blues deeper tones and avoids the crowds of day-trippers arriving from Tangier or Fès.

Where to stay

As in Marrakech, the medina of Chefchaouen concentrates the most charming places to stay — often small guesthouses with terraces overlooking the blue rooftops. It's also the most practical choice: the alleys are pedestrian-only, and a place further out means longer walks with luggage. Compare options on the Chefchaouen listings page.
